INTRODUCTION

Nitrogen is a colourless, odourless, tasteless, nontoxic gas. It can be condensed into a colorless liquid, which can in turn be compressed into a colorless, crystalline solid.

Nitrogen is a major component of the atmosphere which is about 78% by volume of the atmosphere and the 33rd most abundant element on the earth's crust. It is also found in the combine form as organic matter such has proteins, urea and vitamin B.

ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE

* It is used as preservative to prevent rancidity in packaged food, while the liquid Nitrogen is used as refrigerant.

* Nitrogen is used in the industrial manufacture of ammonia, cyanide and carbamide

* Mixed with oxygen, nitrous oxide is used as an anesthetic for some types of surgery.

* Dinitrogen gas is used in large amounts as an inert atmosphere.
